Mount Prospect, IL - The Illinois Fencers Club (IFC) of Mount Prospect is renaming its popular and successful annual Epee Challenge after 2004 Women's Division 1A National Epee Champion and IFC member Christine Dominick, 28. The honor, voted unanimously by the club's board of directors this week, recognizes Christine's significant and continuing contributions to the sport of Fencing on both the local and national levels.
Club President David St. George noted, "Christine has worked tirelessly to promote Fencing among young people, especially women. Our board of directors was unanimous in voting to rename our Epee Challenge event in Christine's honor. It's our way of saying 'thank you' for all she's done for Fencing here in Northern Illinois." Dominick's coach and mentor, Ina Harizanova, added, "She always finds the time to help teach any class of our large Fencing Program for Children." The former Bulgarian Modern Pentathlon World Cup Champion continued, "She is a wonderful role model for girls and young women."
Dominick recently worked to secure club support for a promising young woman fencer who will be competing at this year's Summer National Championships in Sacramento, California, July 1-10. She will also represent the Illinois Fencers Club as a women's epee team member, along with Christine. The newly named IFC Christine Dominick Epee Challenge will next be held in May 2006 in Mount Prospect. Sport fencing involves three blades: foil, epee and saber, with different rules applying to each event. Men, women and children in all 50 States enjoy the competition and fellowship of the ages-old sport, which also includes wheelchair events for the disabled. IFC provides some of the best beginner, children's, and advanced fencing programs in Illinois. Please visit www.illinoisfencersclub.org for more information.
